STEALING CHRISTMAS

"Go Christmas, Go Hanukkah, Go Kwanzaa, Go solstice... go Christmas, go Hanukkah, go whatever holiday you Wannukuh"
GAP,INC Advertisement jingle song.

"The Nazis attempted to persuade housewives to bake cookies in the shape of swastikas, and they replaced the Christian figure of Saint Nicholas, who traditionally brings German children treats on December 6, with the Norse god Odin."

It is interesting that both The Mail and The Telegraph have featured articles on this recently, given the rise in popularity of "the war on Christmas" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_controversy), a seemingly orchestrated, politically correct move to reduce the religious aspect of a tradition that does not sit well with the current political climate. As if the removal of Christ from a "Christmas" card was tantamount to Nazism? It's indeed a laudable claim. Let's be honest about it though, "Family Trees" or "Holiday Tree" and "Festive Decorations" or whatever the new, less offensive Christ-less branding is in fashion are about as obviously castrated as a white skinhead attending a "Heathen Festival" meeting. But is the movement to pull a more homogenised and comfortable costume around an unavoidable elephant really any more honest than the move to conserve and feed it?

I would stand by Sam Harris, author of the books The End of Faith and Letters To A Christian Nation. His work is a bitter pill for complacency and neutrality on the matter.
The unfortunate truth is that one is unable to speak or write publicly about religion and its inherent dangers in these times without being classed as "intolerant" and cast out to live amongst the infidels in the desert. Sam Harris is brave enough to admit that "To speak plainly and truthfully about the state of our world—to say, for instance, that the Bible and the Koran both contain mountains of life-destroying gibberish—is antithetical to tolerance as moderates currently conceive it."

It's sad then I have come to learn that if I am to stand on the side of those who would like to see Christmas destroyed, buried and forgotten for all time, then I must don an iron cross and goosestep back into line . . .

"Religion is nothing more than bad concepts held in place of good ones for all time. It is the denial—at once full of hope and full of fear—of the vastitude of human ignorance."

"Because most religions offer no valid mechanism by which their core beliefs can be tested and revised, each new generation of believers is condemned to inherit the superstitions and tribal hatreds of its predecessors"

Sam Harris, 2004.

I agree with him explicitly that "Spirituality can be—indeed, must be—deeply rational." That "Mysticism, to be viable, requires explicit instructions, which need suffer no more ambiguity or artifice in their exposition than we find in a manual for operating a lawn mower."

The term "pagan" is a Christian adaptation of the "gentile" of Judaism. "Pagan" derived from the Latin meaning "land-dweller" or "rural, rustic, of the country" which has been until recent times a word used to deride "un-believers" by adherents of monotheistic religions (such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam). Now we can alter that word to include the term "Nazi" in the dictionary definition, according to the Christian right-wing press.

I don't know what you'll be doing this Christmas but if you want to come over to mine, we can sit by the "holiday tree" and share a plate of swastika cookies?

A STORY OF A TAPE

"Back in our world I could see my car on the road still and there was straight line burn mark on the ground from where the portal had shown up. It was dark outside and the only reason I noticed the burn was because it was still smoking from the heat. I walked back to my car (didn't run this time) and drove home. The worst part was I couldn't even listen to the tape on the way home because I didn't have a tape player in my car. I actually wasn't even able to listen to it at home either for the same reason and had to go to Wal-mart to buy a tape player just to listen to it.

Unfortunately I don't have any information about the tape other than what is written on the card sleeve. The track names were written, as well as the album title "Everyday Chemistry" ."

James Richards is chasing his dog through a canyon in California, falls and knocks himself unconscious. When he awakes he finds himself to be in an alternate universe where the Beatles never broke up and had continued to release albums. When he returns to our world he brings a tape cassette copy of one of those albums with him. This is the tape.

The Merrows of Forever

While the Japanese art of full-body tattooing has many foreign fans, one of the most infamous must certainly be Charles Manson.

In a dusty glass case at the back of the Yokohama Tattoo Museum are page after page of letters written by Manson to Horiyoshi III, the working name of museum founder Yoshihito Nakano.

Manson was convicted in 1971 in the bloody Tate-LaBianca murders, a notorious crime that left a jarring memory on a generation.

Nakano says Manson started writing to him as "a sort of pen pal" after reading about his work in a tattoo magazine. Nakano says he never did work on Manson.

Most of the letters are from Corcoran Prison in 1995 and were written on colored paper featuring swastikas or eagle-and-swastika combinations. Manson's prison number is listed as B33920.

The majority of the letters are filled with spelling and grammatical errors. Words skip from lower case to upper case and back again, lines tail off in different directions, and the sentiments expressed don't follow conventional logic. Manson at one point writes that he feels a link with the "100% Japan man."

On one three-page letter on white paper, with eagles and swastikas at the top left and right, Manson writes: "Looking DEEP, LONG, now becomeing wonder in the mind Now is when as its always been writen in the SUN. Right ON. I been comeing HOLY WAR as Gods Marks say behold words. Nows the 1940s Hall of prisons in the USA. When behind the judges chambers the English words came that Japan was to be hung for crimes. Then Crime became the war behind the merrows of minds in forever."

Nakano says he doesn't read English and never understood the letters.

ANGEL DEATH!

This was a jacket I designed for Vicotnik's birthday gift in 2007. The letters are real hand-cut leather, painted and glued/sewed on. I think it will look better with time and age, the colours fading and the paint cracking. The cult is alive!
