"We are monkeys with money and guns."

I really enjoyed this Tom Waits interview on the Anti records blog website. Check it out.

A CITY WITHOUT A VOICE

I saw a beautiful film last night. It was called La Antena. It's from Argentina. I think you should watch it.
I bought it from a store near the Southbank in London, but I think it's distributed through www.dogwoof.com with English subtitles. Enjoy!

VIDEO KILLS

This first video is of my favourite drummer of all time. This is Extreme Noise Terror with Mick Harris.

ADDING SALT TO THE WOUND

DISMEMBER - "SOON TO BE DEAD"

DISMEMBER - "DREAMING IN RED"

A HEADBANGING GENTLEMEN'S BALL

As a child of the 80's/90's, I grew up with MTV and we used to stay up all hours of the night at friends places just waiting for Triple Thrash Treat or for Rock Sound (was that the name of the lame UK equivalent to Headbangers Ball?) to play one or two gems of Thrash or Death Metal - sitting with our finger on the video record button . . .As I remember these videos were absolutely mind-blowing at the time . . .at least these days their raw honesty is more charming that Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth's lame attempts. The last Dimmu Borgir video was the most cringe-worthy thing I had ever seen (Did they hire the special effects team from Babylon 5?!?!) and being subjected to the special features of a Cradle Of Filth DVD some years back, I had the displeasure of listening to the uneducated and loathsome lead guitarist try to explain the concept of their video . . ."yeah well it's like erm . . ..dark and erm . . .gothic . . . ." Why didn't he just admit "we paid some wanker £5000 to rip off Tim Burton"?

Like Isten zine's legendary review of Thus Defiled said, " you're just ruining it for everyone" . . .

Here's some real metal . . .

ENTOMBED - "LEFT HAND PATH"

SEPULTURA - "INNER SELF"

BRUTAL TRUTH - "ILL NEGLECT"

ATROCITY - "BLUT" (some criticize this band - but forgetting everything after this album, I think they were at the top of their game and truly original - tho I will admit some dodgy vocals and terrible lyrics, but hey they were German! It's a shame they lost the plot after this)

LAWNMOWER DETH - "KIDS IN AMERICA" (I once watched them play almost an entire set on their backs at the Marquee back in the early 90s and we laughed so much during their show I almost wet myself - who says metal can't be funny??)

LAID IN THE LAPS OF THE MORBID NURSES

Foul and festering in fettered rags, the tortured soul of Decrepit Spectre is free to loom the moors!
We have uploaded a new demo track to our Decrepit Spectre Myspace site!
This is a new band featuring myself, Heimoth and Cyriex from Seth(France) and Aort from Code(UK). All artwork by Costin at Twilight13.
The track is entitled Stranded Angels and is off our forthcoming demo "BILGE-WATER BURIAL HYMNS"
The lyrics were written by myself and Bjorn Aldrahn and I think the result of our collaboration is nothing short of monumental!! We hope to rope Aldrahn in for some guest vocals when we record the album.
Please go to our site and check out the track - it's my return to blackmetal after the premature departure from Code and DHG and I am very proud to be doing something that is very close to my heart both in music, lyrics and imagery . . .

DEATH IS THE ROAD TO AWE . . .

Very few films, that make it on to the cinema screen, move me these days . . .or at least ones that I have the time and energy to make it to - as I am aware there is a plethora of underground and arthouse cinemas that show "real" movies . . . I'm talking about the mainstream "Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation" prefab whorehouses. . .
But anyway, I have always admired the way Aronofsky has managed to transgress the arthouse world and filter some of his more offbeat magic into the mainstream . . . albeit with a very unique and confusing vision to some . . .I loved the mathematical, spasmic, Lynchian PI and the sordid, seething, haunting Requiem For a Dream . . . not least for Selby's (Hubert Selby Jnr) cameo and the documentary/commentary he provides on the DVD version. . . I would have loved to see Aronofsky/Miller's version of the Frank Miller Batman comics . . .but that, alas is not forthcoming . . .
His last film, The Fountain, has been out for some time and I know it took a dive at the movies, with critics describing it as "as a dense, pompous, plodding existential muddle" . . . and, well it kind of is! But I love it for that . . .its dreamlike quality reaches out to try to understand the universe. It tackles and discusses very real and emotional issues, with some really touching and great acting from both Weisz and Jackman. It's zen-like but epic sentimentality is kind of overwhelming and beautiful.
Here is the trailer for this "metaphysical mess":

I also include a track by Lennon Aldort who uploaded his version of the soundtrack on Youtube, with him playing the score on the piano . . .He looks like a young guy and I really admire his talent. I actually prefer to listen to his version than the official score. It's more honest, barren and has more feeling. . .hope you enjoy it:
